지역 여건에 따른 ‘학업성취 우수 중학교’의 특성 분석

본 연구의 목적은 학업성취가 우수한 중학교를 대상으로 학교의 교육과정 및 교수·학습 실태를 분석함으로써 학업성취의 차이를 만들어 내는 학교 내적 요인들의 특성을 탐색하는 데 있다. 특히 도시지역과 읍면지역의 우수 학교 각 한곳을 선정하여, 학교의 지역적 여건 및 그에 따른 학생 집단의 특성 차이에 따라 어떠한 요인이 유사하게 혹은 차별화되어 각각 학업성취의 차이를 만들어 내는지 학교별 특성을 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 학업성취 우수 학교의 구성원에 대한 면담, 교과 수업 관찰 및 수업 교사와 학생 면담 등 다각적인 방법으로 자료를 수집·분석하였다. 분석 결과 중소도시 A중학교의 경우 자체의 학력 향상 계획에 의거한 다양한 방과후 교육과정 운영, 소집단 발견학습 실시, 교사 수준의 교육과정 재구성, 학교장의 리더십과 교사들의 팔로워십의 조화, 학부모와의 협조적 관계 구축 등의 특성이, 읍면지역 B중학교의 경우에는 소규모 학교의 특성을 반영한 프로그램 운영, 개별지도 실시, 교사 수준의 교육과정 재구성을 통해 기본에 충실한 수업 운영, 학생 복지에 초점을 둔 학교 운영 등의 특성이 우수한 학업성취도 유지의 요인인 것으로 파악되었다. 결론적으로, 학교가 환경적 여건을 고려한 최적의 교육과정을 운영하며, 교사가 열정을 토대로 학생 집단의 특성에 부합하는 다양한 교수·학습 방안을 실행하고, 학교장이 이러한 교육과정 및 교수·학습 운영을 지원하는 방향으로 학교를 운영할 때 학업성취의 차이를 만들어 낼 수 있음을 보여주었다.
Abstract
The purposes of the study are to analyze curriculum. and teaching and learning strategies in high- performing middle schools and to identify characteristics of those schools. The study investigated two middle schools: A and B middle schools. The characteristics accounting for high student achievement of A middle schools include following: providing individualized after-school programs, using small group discovery learning in classes, reorganizing curriculum content, providing strong principal's leadership, and establishing collaborative relationships between schools and parents. The characteristics of B schools identified as follows: implementing programs based on characteristics of small school in a rural area, providing individualized teaching, focusing on the basic content of curriculum, supporting students based on their needs. The characteristics of high-performing middle schools identified from the results of the study are as follows: considering school environment and student traits in developing educational plans and managing schools, having teachers who are passionate about their teaching and utilizing various teaching strategies based on student learning styles and subject content, and providing strong principal leadership.
