Abstract

Rorty is similar to Nietzsche with respect to many points. Especially, Rorty’s most important thought i.e. anti-representationalist view is closely related to Nietzsche’s viewpoint of truth. In addition to this, they agree with the status of art concerning the identity of philosophy. Nevertheless, Rorty criticise Nietzsche. In other words, according to Rorty, Nietzsche can’t be true ironist. Because even if Nietzsche had criticised the traditional metaphysics, he in turn has fallen into that metaphysics by making his own critical positions absolute. Then, is Rorty’s opinion justifiable? This paper aims to perform anti-criticism about Rorty’s position. In sum, it is the target of this paper that by means of disclosing ironist’s symptoms in Nietzsche’s thoughts, I want to suggest the impropriety of Rorty’s negative estimation about Nietzsche. It seem to me that Nietzsche has not made his own thought absolute. This paper deals with Also sprach Zarsthustra as the grounds of my opinion. This book is not only a fiction and ironical but also tragic in the sense of Greek Tragedy. In order words, the contents of this book always implies the possibility of self-negation and self-criticism with respect to the intention of that book and the plot also is meant to construct the failed story rather than the successful story in order to accomplish the intention of a author, that is to say, Nietzsche. This intention is the tragic knowledge and the artistic interpretation of world, ultimately aiming at dionysian affirmation. In sum up, Also sprach zarathustra can be defined as ironical tragedy. And it is Nietzsche who has reached not Zarathustra’s intention but his own intention by means of successive suspicions about his doctrines that lies under this book. In this sense, Nietzsche can be determined as Rorty’s ironist and insofar he can’t be the traditional metaphysician.
