이 글은 니체가 주장한 인간의 인식의 한계와 이 한계 내에서의 진리의 가능성에 관하여 체계적으로 서술하고 그러한 진리가 삶에 대하여 갖는 의미를 파악하는 데 목표를 두고 있다. 이 글은 인식이란 무엇인가? 진리란 무엇인가? 우리가 진리를 인식할 수 있는가? 인식의 한계 내에서 진리는 가능한가? 진리는 어떤가치를 가지는가? 삶은 진리를 필요로 하는가? 니체가 추구하는 진리는 무엇인가? 등의 질문에 답하고자 하는 것이다. 이와 같이 이 글은 니체가 인식의 기원, 본질, 대상, 그리고 그 한계에 대하여 어떤 사유를 하는지, 인식의 한계 내에서진리의 가능성에 대하여 어떤 주장을 하는지를 근대 인식론의 전체 흐름과 연관하여 논의할 것이다. 니체의 핵심 주장을 파악하기 위해서는 그가 인식론의 역사에서 어떤 영향사 속에 있고 또 어떤 독창성을 보였는지를 살펴보는 일이 매우 중요하다. 니체도 역시 기존 철학을 수용하거나 비판하면서 자신의 철학을만들어나갔기 때문이다. 니체의 인식과 진리에 대한 사유는 이론의 수준으로까지 정립되어 있다고 말할 수 있을 만큼 그렇게 체계적이지 않다. 따라서 그의 인식론과 진리론의 관점과 핵심을 파악하려면 그가 출판한 책뿐만 아니라 그가 남겨 놓은 유고에 흩어져 있는 관련 논의를 한 데 모아 서술해야 한다. 이러한 이유에서 이 글은 니체의 인식과 진리에 관한 논의를 폭넓게 인용해가면서 그의사유를 추론해볼 것이다. 이 글은 특히 진리와 관련해서는 왜 ‘형이상학적 진리’가 몰락할수밖에 없었는지, 그 대안으로서의 ‘미적 진리’는 어떻게 가능한지, 그리고 그 의미는 무엇인지를 살펴볼 것이다. 니체에 따르면 인간의 삶은 ‘진리’를 필요로 하지만, 우리시대는 이제 더 이상 ‘형이상학적 진리’가 아니라 ‘미적 진리’를 필요로 한다. 이러한 물음들을 살펴보기 위해 이 글은 니체의 형이상학 비판, 비극적 사유와 관점주의, 예술과 진리의 의미에 대해서도 논의할 것이다.
Abstract
This article aims to systematically explore Nietzsche’s conceptions of the limits of human cognition, of the possibilities of truth within these limits, and of the implication of truth for life. It addresses the following questions: “What is cognition?”, “What is truth?”, “Can we recognize truth?”, “Is truth possible within the limits of cognition?”, “What value does truth have?”, “Does life need truth?”, “What truth Nietzsche himself pursue?”, and so on. Thus, this article will discuss what Nietzsche thinks of the object, origin, nature, and limit of cognition and what claims he makes on the possibility of truth within the limits of cognition that he posits, in connection with the whole current of modern epistemology. In order to understand Nietzsche’s key claims, it is important to see what influences the history of epistemology had upon him, and what originality he exhibited. For Nietzsche constructed his own philosophy by accepting or criticizing existing philosophies, as well. Nietzsche’s perspectives on cognition and truth are not so systematic that they cannot be considered to have been established to the level of theory. Therefore, in order to grasp the direction and core of his epistemology and theory of truth, it is necessary to summarize not only the books that he published, but also the related discussions scattered in his posthumous works. For this reason, this writing will derive Nietzsche’s ideas from his various works on cognition and truth. Also, this article will examine why ‘metaphysical truth’ fell down, especially in relation to truth, how ‘aesthetic truth’ as an alternative is possible and what its meaning is. According to Nietzsche, human life requires ‘truth’, but our times no longer need ‘metaphysical truth’ but ‘aesthetic truth’. To examine those questions, this article will discuss Nietzsche’s critique of metaphysics, tragic thinking, perspectivism, and thoughts on the significance of art and truth.
