Abstract
This paper proposes that MNC’s organization of foreign production is not only shaped by economic and technical factors associated with attributes of transactions and location-specific traits, but also influenced by the social process through which subsidiaries become embedded within the host country social context. As subsidiaries establish, develop and accumulate local interorganizational ties, increased level of embeddedness would allow subsidiaries to face lower levels of uncertainties and risk of opportunism in transacting within unfamiliar foreign environment, which in turn would lead to “externalization”, or subcontracting out to local organizations of some production stages previously organized internally within the MNC. The pattern by which the process of externalization proceeds is proposed to be affected by the structural pattern of emergent local networks within the host country structural context.
