Abstract
It is an old, but still valid question even today how to find and formulate the unity and the difference between a great variety of things which exist, in the appropriate philosophical concepts. The efforts to answer this question have given risen to the key concepts such as analogy, univocity and equivocity. Among them, the Scotus’s concept of univocity has been given renewed attention by contemporary philosophers like Deleuze. This article has as its objective to review the Scotus’s theory of univocity and compare it with the another important theory of univocal univocity developed in the late scholasticism, which despite of its importance has been neglected, that is, Eckhart’s theory of univocity. Both theories critically approached the theory of analogy, but from different perspectives. Scotus argued that the theory of analogy would not allow the human mind to come to the cognition of God in a natural way and that the univocal concept of being could only make possible the natural knowledge of God. His concept of univocity is not based on some real characters God and creatures have in common, but on the ‘concept’ of being. With his theory of univocity of being, Scotus did not obliterate the real ontological difference between God and creatures, but tried to establish the conceptual framework within which they would be commonly considered. Eckhart’s theory of univocity, however, pursued the matter not on the basis of concept. It concerned the ontological unity or indistinction of God and creatures, specifically human soul. Eckhart’s concern is not about the conditions or concepts which enable us to think about God, but about the insight into the true-self contemplating the real unity of God and human soul, and about the practice on the basis of that insight. The difference of both theories reveals, on the other hand, that the theory of analogy which they both take to be insufficient could be considered either in a epistemological as well as logical point of view or in an ontological perspective.
