본 논문은 헤겔의 사회/정치철학에서 민족과 국가의 관계를 규명하는 것이다. 그럼으로써 헤겔이 제시하는 민족 개념과 국가 개념의 연관성을 밝히고자 한다. 헤겔의 사회/정치철학에서 민족은 기원이며 국가는 목적이다. 달리 말해 민족은 가능태이고 국가는 현실태이다. 헤겔은 민족의 궁극적인 목적이 구성원의 구체적 자유를 실현하는 것이라고 말한다. 민족의 이러한 목적은 국가에서 실현된다. 즉, 국가는 구성원의 구체적 자유가 실현된 상태임과 동시에 보편적인 정신이 실현된 상태이다. 민족은 변증법적 운동 과정을 거쳐 국가로 나아간다. 헤겔에 따르면 모든 민족은 고유한 인륜성을 형성해나간다. 그 과정에서 구성원의 구체적 자유 실현에 기여하는 인륜성은 보존되고, 그렇지 못한 인륜성은 폐기된다. 폐기된 인륜성의 자리에 민족은 새로운 이성적 인륜성을 생성한다. 민족의 변증법적 운동을 통하여 출현한 국가에는 민족의 고유한 이성적 인륜성이 보존된다. 민족이 변증법적 운동을 통해 도달한 국가는 민족의 속성과 국가의 속성이 결합한 형태를 띤다. 민족은 구체적 현실에서 나타나는 특수한 내용을 뜻하고 국가는 헌법과 법률 그리고 제도와 같은 보편적인 형식을 의미한다. 즉 헤겔에서 국가는 특수한 내용과 보편적 형식의 결합체인 것이다. 이처럼 민족의 특수한 내용과 국가의 보편적 형식이 결합한 국가에서 개인의 구체적 자유가 실현됨과 동시에 보편적인 정신 또한 실현된다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between nation and state in Hegel's social/political philosophy. By doing so, I would like to clarify the connection between the concept of nation and the state in Hegel. In Hegel's social/political philosophy, the nation is the origin and the state is the end. In other words, the nation is the potential and the state is the actual. Hegel says that the ultimate purpose of a nation is to realize the concrete freedom of its members. And the state is a place in which the concrete freedom of its members is realized and the universal spirit is realized. A nation advances into a state through a process of dialectical movement. Every nation forms its own ethical life. In that process, ethical life that contributes to the realization of members' concrete freedom is preserved, while ethical life that does not is denied and discarded. In the spot of the denied and discarded ethical life, a new rational ethical life is created. In this way, the true rational character of the nation is preserved in the nation. The combination of a state and a nation is a combination of a universal form and a specific content. The state means universal forms such as the constitution, laws, and political institutions, and the nation means the specific contents that appear in the specific reality of the state. According to Hegel, individual concrete freedom and universal spirit can only be realized in a state where universal forms and particular contents are combined.
