Abstract

This thesis intends to illuminate the position of Kim Yu Jeong’s novel in the context of the (re)discovery of the locality and the tradition, which was the new trend of our modern literature in the middle and late of 1930’s. And I wish to look at how the ambivalence is revealed between resistance and adaptation to the colonial modern in his novels.First, the local place which is represented in his novels has the two aspects. One is the lyric and vital space which has no relationship with the logic of capital or colonized situation.(<Spring Spring>, <The Camellia Blossom)> The other is the rural district being destroyed by the colonial capitalism, poverty and betray. (<Manmubang>, <The Beans Field Picks Gold> etc)The ignorance, anti-logic, barbarism, and sexual deviation are represented as the characteristics of rural and local place in Kim Yu Jeong’s novels. And these characteristics are used often when the imperialism deals with the colony as the Other. However, he mimics the way of the colonizer through not only obeying to the authority of colonial discourse but also ridiculing it.Second, the gender relationship between male and female has the complex meanings in the power structure. The female has more economic ability than the male. The male doesn’t work, but the female must practice prostitute for the family. This way of survival seems to be regarded as the barbarian behavior to the colonizer. However, these colonized male and female break up with the colonizer’s ideology and protest through revealing their ignorance and sexual deviation. The locality and female’s sexuality which are categorized as the marginal in our modern literature are combined, and have the ambivalent aspects in Kim Yu Jeong’s novel. That is, the primitive, premodern elements show the inferiority of the colonized, but they perform these savage lives. So they disturb the homogeneous gaze of the colonizer.
