Abstract
The purpose of the current study is to investigate risk factors that affect cyber bullying victimization. With the rapid propagation of smart phone in South Korea, there have been unprecedented risks for youth of cyber bullying victimization experience. The current study utilized a sample of 2,044 elementary, middle, and high school students, who were randomly selected by the aid of the Ministry of Education in Seoul, South Korea. The present study conducted survey from May, 29, 2012 to June, 15, 2012 toward 2,044 youths and the participants completed self report questionnaires during their class time. This study used Poisson Regression analysis with SPSS 19.0 statistical package program in order to find crucial factors that are associated with cyber bullying victimization. In particular, this study depended on the key independent factors which included gender, age, income, internet use, parental monitoring attitude, and traditional bullying involvement. The research findings demonstrated that approximately 4% of respondents reported having been involved in cyber bullying as victim during previous six months. In addition, the Poisson regression analysis revealed that students who had increased level of traditional school violence victimization were more likely to be a cyber bullying victim when other variables were controlled. Contrary to previous literature reviews, the use of internet, parental internet supervision, and school aggression were not statistically significant factors that are related to cyber bullying victimization. Further policy implication will be discussed.
