근대어문의 이념을 향하여 - 언어이론으로서의 『문장강화』

『문장강화』(이하 『강화』)는 한국어의 근대적 문장에 관한 최초의 글쓰기 교본으로서 근대 문장 정신을 성립한 책으로 알려져 있다. 고전적인 수사법과 절연하고 근대적 글쓰기의 스타일을 고구하기를 희망한 『강화』에서, '현대적인' 문장, 작법, 문체 등에 관해 주장한 바는 오늘날 한국어 사용자들의 언어 의식과도 근본적으로 밀접하다. 이는 『강화』가 수립한 글쓰기 규범이 타당했기 때문이라기보다 『강화』에서 언어에 접근하는 방식이 타당했기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 『강화』는 근대어문을 만들어낸 책이라기보다 근대어문에 대해 사유하는 과정을 보여준 책이고, 중요한 것은 『강화』가 제정한 어문규범이 아니라 『강화』가 모색한 언어의 힘과 위상이다. 『강화』로부터 혹은 『강화』를 통해 정립된 (좋은) 문장이란 어떤 자질과 가치를 지니는가. 『강화』에서 제시하는 작법은 글의 어떤 속성을 어떻게 활용하는 방법인가. 『강화』에서 말해진 문체란 글의 어떤 차원을 상정했는가. 이와 같은 질문을 가지고 이 글에서는 『강화』의 논리와 주장을 (재)조명하였다. 『강화』는 시대와 역사에 걸맞은 ‘현대적 문장’으로서 정확하고 효용적인 표현을 추구하였다. 또한 언어의 심층적인 작동을 고려한 작법의 역할을 모색하였다. 그리고 글의 개성이 지닐 수 있는 사회적 효과를 깨달아 언어를 “최대의 문화물”로서 인식하였다. 『강화』에서 문장은, 표상이 아닌 의미화에 의한 효과로서, 기술적 도구가 아닌 인식 차원의 매체로서 다루어졌고, 『강화』에서 작법과 문체는, 문장의 조직이 아닌 문장들의 맥락으로서 고려되어 '문장'을 통한 언어의 표현가능성과 표현불가능성을 동시에 사유 가능케 했다. 『강화』에는 문장에 관한 ‘새로운 기율’을 확립하려는 의지보다 문장에 관한 '다른 접근'을 인식한 자각이 더 근원적으로 개입해 있음을 간과하면 안 된다. 이 ‘다른 접근’이야말로 『강화』가 여전히 읽히고 또 연구될 만한 가치일 뿐만 아니라 현대 한국어 사용자들의 언어의식과 공명하는 요인이다.
Abstract
<Lectures on Composition [MunjangGanghwa]> is a comprehensive book of Korean modern literacy. It contains ideas of sentence, composition, style, etc. It regards modern sentence as correct and effective expressions of one's own mind. It considers modern composition to include not only speech but also silence of language. Modern Korean style is looked upon as the 'importance' of the individual style(not just individual style) in the book. The practical writings and the creative writings are regarded as important and necessary simultaneously in the book. It is not inconsistent to stress both of the practical and the creative. Because we ought to write grammatically correct for the proper expression and we ought to write individually creative for the proper expression, too. The common structure and order are required for the correct syntax of writing. The individual deviation and creativity are required for the pragmatical effects of writing. Both of them contribute the modernity of Korean literacy. The book has considerable influence on the Korean contemporary language and literature. It means the book found a important understanding and perception in the Korean literacy. The book regards the effect of sentence as 'signification' not as 'representation'. It seems that language is not the vehicle of thought but the medium of expression. The book treats the composition as a sum of sentences as well as a gap of sentences. The style of writing is considered as the pragmatical context in the book. After all, it's discovered that the book thinks about not only possibility of language but also impossibility of language. The book has not so much a purpose to make new rules of composition as knowledge to approach language in a new way. This is the point that we should pay attention to. Because of the new approach to language, this book <Lecture on Composition> would be resonant with the contemporary Korean speakers.
