Abstract

This article aims to review Jeong Ji-Yong’s Japanese poetry published in “Chosen-Shisyu”(The Colletion of Korean Poetry) and to bring discussion on its translation. The translations by Kim So-Un and Kim Si-Jong were compared with focus on Japanese language usage and cultural and political power in relation to translation during the colonial period. Korean literature was actively introduced to the Japanese Empire in order to absorb and merge Korean culture with Japanese culture. Along with “The Collection of Korean Folk Songs” and “The Collection of Korean Children’s Songs”, Kim So-Un published “The Collection of Korean Poetry” under the cultural movement. Through its 4 different editions from 1940 to 1954, the Iwanami edition in 1954 has been continuously in print demonstrating its popularity. The Iwanami edition was retranslated and published in “The Collection of Korean Poetry–Revised Edition” by a Korean Japanese Kim Si-Jong in 2007. Printed by the same publisher, Kim Si-Jong retranslated it taking different approach to the translation. This version by Kim So-Un, when published, received a lot of compliments from Japanese literary circles, a contrast to the hypercritical world of Korean literary culture. Kim So-Un put more emphasis on target language oriented translation trying to use natural Japanese expressions, whereas Kim Si-Jong took source language oriented translation approach and tried to keep meaning of the original text staying independent from the Japanese language. This different approaches towards translation have been discussed linked to translators’ cultural and political identities. A number of analysis and assessments around the translations of Kim So-Un and Kim Si-Jong have been limited to political perspective, to political power of the Japanese language. The focal point of discussion has not extended to Jeong Ji-Yong’s works. It was 2015 when newly discovered Japanese poems by Jeong Ji-Yong were compared to the two different translations to find Kim So-Un’s translation has more similarity to the original work. It could be explained in Jeong Ji-Yong’s aspirations to write modern poetry, which is in line with Kim So-Un’s Japanese language oriented translation approach. This proves that original poet’s objective and direction come before political identity of translators when analyzing early modern Japanese poetry.
