최인훈 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』에 나타난 탈국가적 상상력연구

함북 회령에서 태어나 성장한 최인훈은 전쟁 이후 월남해 남한에서 정착하면서 피란민으로서의 아픔을 경험한 작가다. 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 한국전쟁 때 월남해 서울에서 살아가는 소설가의 삶을 3여 년간의 시간에 걸쳐 하루 씩 연작 형식으로 그리고 있는 작품이다. 소설 속에서 구보의 직업이 작가와 동일한 ‘소설가’로 설정되어 있다는 것은 작품 해석에 큰 시사점을 던진다. 이는 소설이 쓰는 자와 쓰이는 자의 정체성 분열을 드러내기 위해 사용한 기법이다. 이를 통해 소설은 매일의 삶과 글쓰기 자체에 대한 자기반성적 성찰을 담는다. 작가의 분신처럼 보이는 한 소설가가 정치․경제․문화적 억압에 맞서서 삶과 글을 조형해나가는 과정을 세밀하게 따라가면서, 독자는 ‘네이션’이라는 이념과 상상력이 어떻게 소설 형식으로서 미학적으로 승화됐는지 세밀하게 파악할 수 있다. 최인훈의 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 ‘네이션’이 포함하고 있는 분열과 양가성 그리고 대리보충성을 드러낸다는 점에서 ‘디세미-네이션’의 상태를 정확하게 포착하고 있다. 구보는 세상 속을 살아가되 세상에 결코 완전히 소속되지 못하는 ‘유령’처럼 떠도는 산책자로서 유형화되어 있다. 최인훈 소설 세계는 네이션에 대한 끊임없는 사유와 탈주의 몸짓, 현실의 강박으로부터 벗어나려는 환상적이고도 실험적인 기법들, 식민지 근대의 이념에 대항서사들을 틈입시키려는 시도 등을 통해 동시대의 담론에 존재하는 분열과 갈등의 요소들을 재현하고 있다.
Abstract
Choi In-hun was born and brought up in Hamgeyungbuk-do Hoeryung in North Korea. He defected from North Korea and settled down in South Korea after Korean War. As a refugee, he was suffered from the tragic division of the country. His works provide a realistic description of the painful lives of people living in a weak nation remained in a colonial state by the world powers. A Day of Novelist Gubo is a serial novel which depicts a life of a novelist, Gubo throughout three years, who lived in Seoul after Korean War. The fact that the main character Gubo’s job is a novelist is of most important significance. In this novel, Gubo is considered Choi In-hun’s alter-ego, which is the literary technique representing the disruption of identity between the writing person and the written one. Through this technique, this novel embodies the self-reflective consideration about everyday life and writing. While exploring the process of moulding his life and literature standing up to the political, economical and cultural suppression we can understand the way that ideology and imagination of ‘nation’ has been sublimated esthetically into novel forms. A Day of Novelist Gubo embodies accurately a the state of dissemi-nation in revealing the ambiguity and supplementarity of the nation. Gubo like ghost who lives in the world but never belongs to that has been stereotyped as a wandering walker. Choi In-hun’s novels represents the disruptions and conflicts existing in the contemporary discourse through gesturse of escape, the fantastic and experimental techniques, and endless attempts to introduce counter-narratives into the ideology of the colonial modernity.
