Abstract
In Free Food for Millionaires (2007), Min Jin Lee showcases diverse and transformative Korean diaspora in the United States because Korean Americans have not been represented or stereotyped in American society. Our textual analysis of Lee’s work is compared with its paratext within the contexts of American and Korean media and academia. This comparison finds out the ways Americans and Koreans distort Lee’s intention for their own social and political reasons. Free Food for Millionaires shows that Korean Americans experience discrimination, are continuously stereotyped, and internalize those stereotypical images. Through the multifaceted stories of these Korean Americans, Lee criticizes discriminatory actions and stereotypes. Nevertheless, paratext of this text and its contextualization in media connect the text to the Virginia Tech shooting and Seung-Hui Cho although there is no direct connection between the text and the incident. At the same time, previous scholarship criticized Lee’s work for its omission of direct comments on racism. This kind of criticism narrows down the capacity and freedom of a writer of color with regards to the topic and content. Paradoxically, our problematization of paratext and criticism of Free Food for Millionaires proves that it is imperative show various images of Korean Americans and their diverse stories.
