본 연구는 이민진의 『백만장자를 위한 공짜음식』에서 주인공 케이시 한의 진로결정 과정을 내러티브 구성주의 관점에서 분석해냄으로써 그녀의 내러티브 정체성이 어떻게 구성되는지를 밝혔다. 본 연구는 독서기반 진로상담에서 내러티브 구성주의의 상담적 원리와 실제를 이해하는데 기여할 것으로 기대한다. 본 연구는 Strauss와 Corbin의 근거이론의 지속적 비교분석의 방법을 활용해서 텍스트의 내용을 분석하고 이를 내러티브 구성주의 관점에서 재구성했다. 먼저 진로 미결정과 정체, 결정으로부터 이탈의 과정에서 보이는 감상성, 비합리성, 충동성과 진로에서 정체성과 소명을 찾고자 하는 욕구 간의 긴장(tension)을 밝혔다. 이런 긴장을 낳는 맥락적 조건으로 기질-양육적 맥락, 부모세대의 지배적 내러티브, 경쟁지상주의의 성공의 낙관주의와 실패의 숙명주의, 미국 내 직장에서 가난한 한국 여성에 대한 차별, 자기소외와 중독, 자기혐오를 낳는 소비습관에 주의(attention)를 기울였다. 이런 억압적 맥락조건의 틈새와 균열을 만들어내는 대인관계로서 주요 등장인물들의 역할을 매개로 케이시가 집착, 자아 이상, 직업적 흥미, 인생대본과 인생모토를 통해서 어떻게 내러티브 정체성을 구성하며 자신의 캐릭터 전환을 지향(intention)하는지를 밝혔다.
Abstract
This study reveals how narrative identity is structured by analyzing the career decision-making process of Casey Han, the protagonist in Min Jin Lee’s Free Food for Millionaires, from the perspective of narrative constructivism. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of counseling principles and practices of narrative constructivism in reading-based career counseling. This study analyzed the text using the constant comparative analysis method of Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory and reconstructed it from the perspective of narrative constructivism. First, this study revealed the tension between sentiments, irrationality, impulsiveness, and the desire to find identity and calling in the career path, focusing on the temperament-custodial context, the master narrative of the parent generation, the optimism and fatalism of success and failure of competitive supremacy, discrimination against Korean women in the U.S. in workplaces, self-loathing, and addiction. Then, this study reveals how, with the roles of main characters as intermediaries of interpersonal relationships that create gaps and cracks in these oppressive contextual conditions, Casey constitutes a narrative identity and intends her character transformation through preoccupation, self-ideal, professional interest, life script, and life motto.
