Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the revitalization of regional culture based on the history of Yeongam Gurim Village. Gurim Village is a old village of aristocratic class located in Gunseomyeon Yeongam County which has a long history, Confucian rituals and traditions. Daedonggye is characteristic of the regional culture of Gurim Village. It has a history of 500 years and is important to understand the old village and academic facts of the Joseon Dynasty. Its meeting hall is Hoesajung that is the most historical pavilion in Korea. It has a lot of myths and legends, telling historical facts and fi gures like State Preceptor Doseon and a distinguished Confucian scholar, Wangin. It has also historic monuments, pavilions and shrines, natural landscape that make Gurim Vilage an attractive tradition village. Its Confucianism thoughts by the town aristocratic class have represented the traditions of Gurim Village. Gurim Village is famous for its potteries which have been produced for a long time since Unified Silla. Gurim Kiln Site has recently been excavated in Gurim Village. Pottery Culture Center was built in memory of Gurim Kiln Site where they have offered a variety of pottery experience learning and sold Gurim traditional household potteries. Th e ceramics industry is a phenomenon of the regional culture that is in vogue these days. Th at’s why Gurim Village has been called culture village. Yeongam County have been also interested in cultural industries like any local government. The local festivals represent the revitalization of regional culture. The Yeongam County has hosted Wangin Cultural Festival in memory of Wangin from Yeongam and the various cultural traditionality and history of Gurim Village. Recently, Yeongam Ceramic Museum and Yeongam Art Museum were opened in Gurim Village. Hanok Village which off ers various traditional culture experiences was also built. Th ese changes refl ect the modernity that creatively inherits the tradition and history of Gurim Village.
