이 글은 오정희의 소설 「중국인 거리」를 존 어리(John Urry, 1946~2016)가 제시한 모빌리티의 주요 이론을 적용하여 작품의 면모를 살펴본 것이다. 「중국인 거리」는 한국 전쟁이 끝난 직후에 인천의 차이나타운을 배경으로, 주인공의 성장 과정과 당대의 사회·생활상을 작가의 섬세한 시선으로 그려낸 수작으로 평가받는 작품이다. 이 소설은 그동안 여성문학의 관점이나 성장소설의 시각에서 주로 연구되었다. 하지만 주인공이 고향에서 인천 차이나타운으로 이사 온 것을 계기로 작품이 진행되고 그 의미가 부각된다는 점을 고려할 때, 모빌리티의 방법론을 적용하여 이 작품의 내용을 분석할 수 있다. 모빌리티의 방법론을 통한 작품의 분석은 이 작품을 입체적이면서 다각도로 접근해 볼 수 있다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
Abstract
This article is to examine how Oh Jung-hee’s novel Chinese Street focuses on migrants on the border after the Korean War from the perspective of mobility. While the focus of modern mobility is on means of transportation, this article focuses on the physical, social, geographical, and physical movements of migrants who have not been suffi ciently studied by textual research. John Urry’s book Mobility discusses the joy and pain people get from moving, which come from people, things, and information. While previous studies have focused on the delicate representation of middle-aged women in Oh’s novels, this article examines how the geographical movement of ‘father’ and the process of physical movement of ‘I’ are depicted. Th erefore, this paper presents various and new horizon movements in the backdrop of Chinese Street.
