Abstract
This article reviews research and debates on the temporal structure of tonality in the music psychology literature and explores possibilities of incorporating temporal structures into psychological representations of tonality. It introduces the debate between Carol Krumhansl and David Butler regarding the validity of “tonal hierarchy theory” and probe-tone technique. Bret Aarden’s melodic expectancy study is reviewed concerning its implication of key profiles being tonal schemas of closure. The temporal components of Jamshed Bharucha’s melodic anchoring and William Thomson’s tonality frame as well as David Huron’s explanation of scale-degree qualia in terms of transitional probability are explicated. It is argued that in order to account for temporal effects found in tonality perception temporal structures of tonality such as metrical and phrase structures should be incorporated into theoretical models and appropriate experimentation techniques should be devised to investigate the temporal structure of tonality.
