The rapid development of technology after the 20th century not only transformed society, but also impacted music. This paper analyzes how the relevance between music and technology developed in modern Korean music, through the works of Nam June Paik and Donoung Lee. Nam June Paik, who is the renowned creator of video art, has used the television as a creative medium. Donoung Lee, the representative computer-music composer of Korea, has attempted using a sensor, compact disk, and speaker system to build an interactive sound installation. The following discussion will examine various approaches in technology utilization and their implications, while looking at the representative works of the two individuals. The relationship between postmodernism and the aesthetic significance in their works will also be discussed.
Abstract
