The goal of every art work is creating originality based on tradition. Composers have been struggling to establish their own styles while absorbing historical developments. The fruit of their effort is the richest of all periods in the music history we live in. One of the remarkable characteristics in the twentieth century art music is the attention given to relatively neglected aspects of music such as timbre, texture and space. Along with the scientific advance, exploring new musical elements sets contemporary composition apart from earlier styles. Karlheinz Stockhausen(1928~) is one of the most important twentieth century composers who pioneered artificial timbres as the foundation of his major works. We're going to study timbres as the ideas and the compositional techniques in contemporary music through Stockhausen's work, Mikrophonie II.
