슈만이 음악가로 전향한 초기 그의 오른손에 생긴 문제는 피아니스트로의 꿈을 접게 만든 결정적인 사건이었다. 그러나 치료되지 못 한 슈만의 손의 원인을 당시 의학의 한계 탓으로만 돌리기에는 현대에도 유사한 경우들이 음악가나 스포츠선수에게 종종 발생하고 있다는 점에서 의문의 여지가 있다. 이와 같이 원인을 규명할 수 없는 신체이상의 치료에 있어서 정신의학의 도움을 구하는 데에 착안하여 본 논문에서는 슈만의 손이라는 신체에 일어난 이상이 그의 정신적 문제와 맞닿아 있다 보고 슈만 초기의 정신 상태를 드러내는 사건으로 프레임한다. 이를 위해 슈만이 피아니스트로의 전환을 꾀했던 이십대 초기 그의 정신적 붕괴와 신체적 증상들을 신체의 이상을 드러내는 정신적 장애인 신체증상장애의 진단기준과 연결지어 살펴봄으로써 그러한 가능성을 구체화하고자 하였다.
Abstract
The problem Schumann faced in his right hand soon after having made his decision to become a professional pianist was a decisive one, which eventually forced him to abandon his dream of leading a career as a concert pianist. But it is difficult to conclude that his hands were never cured because of the limitations of the medicine of the time as similar cases are often found today in musicians and athletes. The present paper suggests that the physical problem of Schumann’s hand is linked to his mental problem, and frames this as an event that reveals the composer’s mental instability in the early years. This study examines the symptoms Schumann showed in his twenties, when he attempted to become a pianist, using a set of diagnostic test for somatic symtom disorder.
