Abstract

This paper argues that Longinus’s ancient writing, On the Sublime, built a crucial basis for the concept of “classical music” when it was newly developed in the middle of the eighteenth century. At that time “classical music” meant relatively old and serious music, and it mostly applied to instrumental music. By analyzing the seventeenth section of “The Letter of Mr. Vieuville to Mr. Bonnet, in which French Music is Defended and Italian Music is Criticized (Schreiben des Herrn Vieuville an den Herrn Bonnet, worinnen die französische Musik vertheidigt, und die italiänische kritisirt wird)” from Kritische Briefe über die Tonkunst (Berlin, 1760), this paper traces the critical value of the writer and his contemporaries, examining how their viewpoints reflect Longinus’s philosophy on the sublime. His notion of the sublime emphasizes emotional expression, innate ability, and originality, and it was projected in mid-eighteenth-century musical criticism as a focus on “strong musical expression” and “musical genius.” 1) By valuing strong musical expression, music critics began to appreciate the power of music itself, particularly instrumental music. 2) By projecting the notion of the sublime on music, the idea of greatness was applied to music as well as literature, and it changed the identity of music to being more serious. 3) Celebrating musical genius enhanced the status of music to the level of literature, and it became a basis for which old music could survive and be performed repeatedly. Finally, those aspects became strong impetus to form the concept of “classical music.”
