Abstract
This paper examine how Chopin effectively embodies his original harmonic language in the Nocturnes by examining the special tonal and harmonic devices in Nocturne in C# minor, Op. 27, No. 1. This study deals with the modulation process of the middle section, where the subtle changes and interplay of the two notes E and E# stand out. I analyze how to interpret this section within the overall tonal context, focusing on the unusual progression at the end of the middle section. This paper also explores how the characteristics of the middle section are related to the first and last sections. In addition, this study briefly discusses on the features in the Nocturne in Db major, Op. 27, No. 2, paired with the Nocturne in C# minor. By examining the distinctive semitonal relations compressed in this Nocturne, this paper accounts for the stylistic devices referred to as the composer’s innovative harmonic technique.
