Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide implications for the development of the domestic major self-selection system by conducting a qualitative meta-analysis of the college life experiences of students in the major self-selection system. Based on previous studies, a qualitative meta-analysis procedure consisting of seven steps was established, and seven analysis data were used in the study. The analysis data were collected using the CASP checklist. The seven analysis data were domestic research papers (KCI-registered academic papers) in order to derive research results appropriate to the domestic situation. The results of the study are as follows. First, the major self-selection system grants students autonomy and provides opportunities for career exploration, but at the same time, students may feel uncertainty and burden about their choices at first due to the lack of clear guidelines. Second, students experienced administrative confusion due to the absence of a dedicated department that could manage and support their academic areas during the major self-selection system. In particular, it was confirmed that the academic support system, such as professors and facilities for each major, was inadequate. Third, many students were unable to complete the courses they wanted due to inconsistencies with the existing department-based course registration and credit completion system, and there were cases where students experienced great confusion because graduation requirements were not clearly defined. Fourth, there was a lack of communication between professors and students and difficulties in forming a bond between students. Although students complained about the absence of faculty to guide their academic exploration, some professors tended to be passive in guiding students in the autonomous major selection system. Based on the research results, the following conclusions were drawn. First, an administrative and academic support system dedicated to students in the autonomous major selection system should be established. Second, a mentoring system should be introduced to strengthen communication between professors and students. Third, a student network should be formed and a learning community should be established. This study was able to provide implications for the developmental operation of the autonomous major selection system in Korea, and it is also meaningful in that it can be referenced for activating research in the field in the future.
