Abstract

This study focuses on the genealogy and practical functions of ancienthorse straps excavated in China, Japan and Korea via comparison ofmanufacturing methods and sizes. Latest researches about the existinghorse straps, terracotta figurines and haniwas revealed that there wereeight different types developed for the manufacturing of horse harness. Interestingly, seven of the eight types, excepting for the H-type made by thedouble-layering technique, were made by stitching along the centerline offolded leather straps to ensure extra durability with the horse pulling a cart orrider on its back. In China, the harness manufacturing techniques exhibitedwide differences between regions and traditions of which the type shown bythe Tang tri-color pottery after the 8th century was transmitted to Japan asshown by the relics collected in Shoso-in, Japan. The horse straps used in ancient Northeast Asia may be divided into fourtypes according to the strap’s breadth. The narrowest straps, 1.0 to 1.3㎝,were largely used to pull cart between the early Han period to the late 3rdcentury, while those made after the 4th century were 1.5 to 1.7㎝ wideand used for breastcollars and girths attached with ornamental pendantsor headstall without ornaments. The wider straps, about 2.5㎝, discoveredat the ancient Silla and Gaya tombs were generally used for girths, andit is probable that the straps were wider when used for breastcollars. The horse straps were introduced to Japan along with metal harness fittings, contributing to the development of its own manufacturing techniques. Asthe harness became larger during the late 6th century, the straps had a largerbreadth as well, to about 3.7㎝. Experts presume that the belly bands hadbeen made of fabric and 4㎝ or wider until the early modern period. Inconclusion, studies on the triple horse straps are expected to provide richresearch materials on the manufacturing of horse harness in ancient timesand important clues and basic resources for the restoration of ancient horseharness and fittings.
