본 연구는 장애청년의 연애 인식 및 경험을 탐구하기 위해 8명의 연구참여자를 대상으로 심층면담을 수행하였다. Giorgi의 현상학적 질적 연구 방법을 통해 33개의 드러난 주제와 8개의 본질적 주제를 도출하였다. 연구참여자들의 연애 인식과 경험은 ‘장애로 인한 복잡한 자화상’, ‘장애와 사회적 상호작용의 제약’, ‘연애와 심리적 어려움’, ‘연애의 현실적 어려움’, ‘장애로 인한 소통의 어려움’, ‘다방면의 기술과 노력을 요하는 그들만의 연애 방법론’, ‘일상적이고 평범한 존재를희망함’, ‘연애로 인한 긍정적 변화’라는 주제로 나타났다. 장애청년의 연애 인식과 경험의 의미는 자기인식 차원과 외부적 차원으로 드러났다. 자기인식차원의 핵심 요소인 자기인식은 장애청년들이 연애 과정에서 자신만의 기술과 노력을 통해 독자 적인 연애 방법론을 개발하는 데 영향을 주었으며, 연구참여자들은 연애를 통해 일상적이고 평범한 존재로 자리매김하기를 희망하였다. 이 경험은 자기 수용, 자존감 향상 등의 긍정적인 변화로 이어졌다. 반면 외부 차원은 사회적 환경, 장애로 인한 소통의 어려움, 연애의 현실적 어려움, 연애의 심리적 어려움, 도전과 딜레마의 요인으로 구성되었다. 이 두 차원은 서로 밀접하게 상호작용하였다. 본 연구는 장애청년들의 연애 경험이 보편적 일상의 향유와 온전한 자유의 회복을 의미하며, 이는 결국 이들이 일상적이고 평범한 존재로서의 삶을 희망하는 것과 연관된다는 점에서 중요한 의의를 지닌다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로, 사회적 인식을 개선하기 위한 교육적 개입의 필요성 과, 물리적, 소프트웨어적 환경 접근성 개선, 그리고 장애인의 성적 권리와 정체성을 존중하는 사회적 인식 변화를 촉구했다.
Abstract
This study conducted in-depth interviews with 8 participants to explore the perceptions and experiences of romantic relationships among young adults with disabilities. Through Giorgi’s phenomenological qualitative research method, 33 emergent themes and 8 essential themes were derived. The participants’ perceptions and experiences of romantic relationships were categorized into themes such as ‘complex self-image due to disability,’ ‘limitations in social interactions caused by disability,’ ‘psychological difficulties in romantic relationships,’ ‘practical challenges in romantic relationships,’ ‘communication difficulties due to disability,’ ‘their own methodology of romantic relationships requiring various skills and efforts,’ ‘hope for an ordinary and normal existence,’ and ‘positive changes brought by romantic relationships.’ The meaning of the participants’ perceptions and experiences of romantic relationships emerged from two dimensions: self-awareness and external factors. The self-awareness dimension reflected how they recognized and interpreted their own identity, emotions, and behaviors, including the challenges of communication due to disability and their efforts at self-improvement. The external dimension showed how external factors, such as social stereotypes and understanding and support from partners, influenced their experiences. These two dimensions interacted with each other and affected the participants’ experiences. This study finds significance in that the romantic experiences of young adults with disabilities represent a restoration of complete freedom and the enjoyment of universal everyday life, ultimately tied to their hope for an ordinary and normal existence. Based on these findings, the study emphasizes the need for educational interventions to improve social perceptions, the enhancement of physical and software accessibility, and the promotion of social awareness that respects the sexual rights and identities of individuals with disabilities.
