(A.J. 1.16.2-3 §§246, 250-252; Mos. 1.11 §58; A.J. 1.11.2 §196).

Abstract

This article is a study of how to interpret John 4:1-42. Thus far, scholarshave suggested a variety of ways to interpret this text. In this study, Ireview these various methods in order and find out which of them is themost convincing. The method of interpretation of the text can be categorizedinto eight ways. I review each interpretation method through this articleand discuss the merits and shortcomings of each method (interpretingit as a narrative, interpreting it as a drama, interpreting it as a poetry, interpretationin terms of betrothal type-scene, interpretation in terms of ancienthospitality custom, interpretation in terms of recognition type-scene, applying speech act reading, applying reader-response criticism). Basedon this analysis I conclude that John 4:1-42 is a narrative in terms of genreand that this passage should be interpreted through the lens of the ancienthospitality custom and recognition type-scene in terms of interpretativemethodology. First of all, I think it is most persuasive to see this text asa narrative with historicity. Some of John 4:1-42 may have a poetic formand the dramatic features used in Greek drama may be employed by theauthor. But the narrative seems to be the best option when we considerthe entire genre of John 4:1-42. Regarding interpretive method ancienthospitality custom and Greek recognition type-scene seem to be two mostconvincing tools for this text. First of all, as Andrew E. Arterbury observed,it is noteworthy that ancient writers such as Philo and Josephus interpretedGenesis 24:10-61, Exodus 2:15-21, Genesis 18:1-16, and Genesis 19: 1-24in terms of ancient hospitality custom (A.J. 1.16.2-3 §§246, 250-252; Mos. 1.11 §58; A.J. 1.11.2 §196). Genesis 24:10-61 and Exodus 2:15-21 wereclassified as betrothal type-scenes. Therefore, these interpretations of ancientwriters strongly support this claim. Regarding recognition type-scene,two observations lead us to this method. First, Greco-Roman literature waswidespread in the Mediterranean region at the end of the first century AD. Second, John 4:1-42 and recognition type-scene of Greco-Roman literatureshare significant conceptual parallels such as the meeting at the well betweenman and woman (Odysseus/a girl and Jesus/the Samaritan woman),hospitality, the gradual development of recognition, and not developinginto marriage. These two points strongly guide us to interpret this text interms of the Greek recognition type-scene.
