Abstract

A significant new tendency can be found among recent Korean independent documentary films about labor since the 2010s. While the activist labor documentary films made in the 1990s focused on recording labor union’s fight against company and government and appealing for workers’ urgent solidarity, the documentary films about labor newly emerging in the 2010s are emphasizing an aesthetic value of composition and cinematography and using poetic and metaphorical performance in order to describe the condition and history of labor in South Korea. These new documentaries usually utilize a long take and a fix shot as their main technique rather than hand-held or a follow shot. The films shift their focus from people to environment, words such as interview or narration to bodily performance or poetic imagery, a pending issue to a genealogical research, workers’ activity to comment on a change in the condition of labor. This paper closely analyzes four recent labor documentaries, The Color of Pain(2010), A Dream of Iron(2013), Factory Complex(2014), and The Emotional Society on Stage(2015) in order to examine the new tendency of labor documentary in South Korea.
