영화의 리터러시와 부산의 예술영화관: 1990년대를 중심으로

Abstract

The public systems that perform the function of film literacy have traditionally been known as nearly absent in Korean film history. This article, however, investigates the opposite by arguing that despite public memories, there have been proper efforts to teach and cultivate the film literacy. A particular focus will be on the case of Busan in the 1990s, for which two perspectives on looking at this spatio-temporality can be suggested as premises. First, since film literacy has only recently entered the national education system, it was the relationship between film literacy and art film-oriented cinematheques that took the shape of enjoyment and learning of as well as communication through films. Second, rather than (or due to the inability of) being linked to students and schools, film literacy and its recognition grew spontaneously from the conjoining of civil rights movement and cinephile movement. This makes it possible to assess the education and socialization of the audience within the history in which the cinematheque movement grew from pseudo-screening spaces to the state-funded art-house theater.    This article focuses on the relationship between film literacy and cinematheque movement in Busan of the 1990s. The concept of and debate around film literacy is summarised, in order to theoretically establish the interrelation between cinematheques and film literacy. Based on this, I will review the recent history of various cinematheque spaces in Busan. This article particularly intends to highlight how film literacy has been conditioned, how the cinematheques have been formulated in Busan, and ultimately in what way the cinemaqheques in Busan can be defined as a thriving field of film literacy.
