초록
In 1909, Benjamin B. Warfield (1851-1921) began an amazing series of writings focusing on Calvin’s theology. While he was concerned to establish the Bible as the ground of theology and reason as a prime theological tool, Warfield was even more interested in the theology he felt the Bible teaches and reason supports. Although Warfield is better-known for his views on the Bible, his commitment to classic Protestantism, especially Calvinism was deeper and more comprehensive than even his commitment to inerrancy. Warfield spelled out explicitly what he meant by Calvinism, and summarized the Reformed worldview as one that “begins... centers... and ends with the vision of God in His glory, and it sets itself before all things to render to God His rights in every sphere of life-activity. Major purpose of this paper is to consider the content of Warfield’s Calvin studies in defense of orthodoxy at the point of Princeton Theology. It was Warfield who exposed the American church to their Reformed origins, especially as founded on Calvin. On the basis of his Calvin studies, Warfield formed and constructed his own theology. It is to emphasize that the same Calvinistic conception of sovereignty governs Warfield’s soteriology and his view of Scripture as well. That’s why there is a necessity to regard him as one of the most important confessional Calvinist theologians in American Presbyterianism.
