초록
This study was to analyze the expressions of requests in the Bible for college students learning English for missionary purposes. In order for learners to accurately understand the English Bible, speech acts of request in the English text were analyzed. The entire text of 28 chapters of the Acts of the Apostles was classified into three sections. In addition, nine types of head acts of request strategies were introduced to classify the request in the Acts of the Apostles. In this results, the proportions of ‘mood derivable’ in direct request appear to be much higher as the main request expression in three parts. This results suggest that the biblical texts are described in clear and conclusive styles regarding its implied meaning. In other words, the styles of request are quite different from the speech styles that learners frequently face. The results of this study are helpful for English Bible learners to understand accurate written English texts. As a followup study, analysis of various linguistic approach of speech acts on biblical materials other than the Acts of the Apostles is expected.
