Abstract

The mainstream churches of the new Christian era belong to theGlobal South. Yet these churches lack the financial power and the politicalinfluence their Western counterparts currently have. To be effective, churches, like those in Myanmar, need an appropriate mission approachthat comes from these positions of weakness. Churches in Myanmar areparticularly vulnerable church as they engage in missionary practice in aconflict zone. The research methods used are literature review, interviewswith pastors working in conflict zone and participant observation forcommunities fleeing conflict zones. The Htee The Lei Church is a powerless community that has receivedalmost no help by the Myanmar military, the international community, and ethnic armed groups. Military conflicts between various armed groupshave restricted their travel, imposed multiple taxes, forced them to fleetheir homes, and faced warnings of military conflict. Christians feel powerless to change their situation. The ministry of pioneers Saw Phoge and Mumuae in Htee The Leifaced a difficult challenge in the martyrdom of Saw Phoge. However, since then the ministry expanded. A school, dormitory, and orphanageministry developed through a widowed woman worker who demonstratedthe power of God. Although this church of the Htee The Lei has experienced martyrdom, deprivation, and marginalization during the conflict, it continues to showthe breadth and depth of God’s mission. A martyred family led the churchto embrace orphans. Their lack of finances led them to experience God’sprovision. Their marginalization led them to look to the eternal kingdomof God for acceptance and belonging. The widow and church revealedGod’s strength, demonstrated abundant devotion in the midst of poverty, and made God’s mission more evident by being the hope for worldmissions among the nameless and weak.
