다큐멘터리가 디지털 기술의 발전을 기반으로 다양한 양식과의 융합을 시도하며 현실 세계의 급격한 변화를 수용해온 것과 같이, 애니메이션 또한 다큐멘터리와 극영화의 스토리텔링 기법을 응용하며 허구로 규정지어진 텍스트의 범위를넓히고 있다. 특히, <바시르와 왈츠를>(Waltz with Bashir, Ari Folman, 2008) 을 포함한 애니메이티드 다큐멘터리는 1) 사실적 소재와 다큐멘터리의 제작 관습을 취하고, 2) 극적 몰입을 위해 극영화의 서사구조와 촬영, 편집 스타일을 응용하며, 3) 기억, 감정, 꿈, 환상 등 보이지 않는 것과 초현실적인 영역, 과거 사건의 시각화를 위해 애니메이션을 활용함으로써, 새로운 형식의 리얼리즘을 구현하고, 다양한 매체의 스토리 구성 방식이 융합된 대안적 스토리텔링을 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
Animation has extended its boundary from the fictional text to realism films, adopting storytelling techniques from documentary and narrative films. Especially, animated documentary including Waltz with Bashir have developed its own storytelling by 1) taking the real events as film materials and the traditional methods of making documentary films such as interview, narration, photograph & document, eyewitness, experts, and captions, 2) applying dramatic structure, cinematography and editing style from narrative films for audiences’ empathy, and 3) utilizing the arts of animation for visualizing the invisible elements out of emotions, dreams, hallucinations, and memories of past events. These converged storytelling modes of animated documentary can provide the sufficient possibility to create the new types of realism between daucmentary and narrative films.
