Abstract

Luke 16 consists of elements that are difficult to grasp their purpose and meaning: the parable of unjust steward, a cluster of Jesus’ knotty teachings, and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Since these texts are arranged in a concentric structure around verse 14, scholars agree that Luke 16 is structurally unified and that its elements convey a unified message on a subject. However, scholars find clarifying the inner unity of Luke 16 challenging, namely, to identify the topic of Luke 16 through elements that are difficult to understand and to provide a consistent interpretation of them under the identified theme. Multiple scholars have attempted to clarify the unity of content in accordance with the unity of structure. Among them, prominent are “ironical reading,” “socio-rhetorical reading,” and “humourrhetorical reading.” These approaches made remarkable contributions to understanding Luke 16, but the validity of the suggested themes have yet to be proven. I suggest that a topos analysis of Luke 16 is a solution to identifying its theme. By reading ancient texts closely, a topos analysis identifies a traditional moral philosophical topic and provides a conventional way of dealing with the traditional theme. This approach aims to map out the world of ancient mind by understanding the content of and the relation between topoi. Accordingly, if the theme of Luke 16 can be clarified by comparing it with a proper ancient text, the whole chapter can be interpreted with consistency under the valid theme proven with textual evidence. The present article compares Luke 16 to Dio Chrysostom’s Oratioines 17 just as A. J. Malherbe compared Jesus’ teaching on covetousness in Luke 12 with the same text. The article attempts to identify the theme of Luke 16 and to interpret it with thematic consistency.
