Abstract
The studies by Philip Esler and Jerome Neyrey share a concern to analyze the social and cultural ramifications of religious language and movements with regard to the Parable of the Great Banquet in Luke 14:15-24. This essay examines the socio-cultural venue which offers ramifications for their interpretations. Following their different insights and models, however, the essay further explores the parable from a view of the margins grounded in the present. This does not mean that the present "categories" will simply be projected back into the Lukan text, but rather that questions arising from the present will be asked of the given text. Hence, the essay aims to promote a dialogue in which each voice can be safeguarded and, thus, to promote solidarity with the world in a more liberating way. Without a doubt, Luke’s table fellowship invites us to build an alternate practice, wherein one cultivates collegiality and mutual support and fulfills many of the genuine needs that we might associate with the table; yet at the same time it alerts the readers to the present socio-economic misappropriation of the power.
