Abstract
The major purpose of this paper is to evaluate the recent trend of South Korea’s party system institutionalization. In order to answer the question of why South Korea’s individual parties have continuously been fragile and unstable despite of the strong persistence of regional party competitions ever since the country’s democratization in 1987, four dimensions of South Korea’s party system institutionalization have been analyzed: 1) stability of party competition patterns; 2) strength of party’s social support base; 3) level of party’s political legitimacy; 4) degree of party’s dependence on party leadership. The pattern of regional party competitions have been very stable during the past six presidential and seven parliamentary elections. However, all of the South Korean parties have been failed to cultivate their strong social support bases under their very short lives, since all of the parties have very often splitted and/or merged right before the elections in a way to win the immediate election. Therefore, more than a majority of South Korean voters regard the country’s parties as electoral machines of political elites rather than channels of expressing the electorate’s interests. Under this situations, all of the South Korean parties have been failed to get the legitimate political status, while the country’s voters have been expressing their strong anti-party sentiments. It is very hard to expect more institutionalized party system of South Korea in the near future, as the constituent parties are very likely to be fragile and unstable. The country’s party elites would continue to split and merge their parties in a way to gain the electorate’s votes at immediate elections, because they have frequently been benefitted from such electoral strategies ever since the country’s democratization.
