문화코드 분석을 통한 시민교육의 가능성 연구:「영화 속 문화코드로 읽는 미국 시민사」강의 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

If citizenship refers to the qualities or qualifications that a citizen should possess as an active member of a political community, it is a fluid concept that varies depending on the time, social situation, and context. With this premise in mind, this study aims to reveal the implications and possibilities of students' cultural code analysis of American history films in a college liberal arts course for civic education. To this end, we first examined the binary discursive structure of civil society as a methodological basis for subjectively meaningfulizing the concept of citizenship. According to Alexander's theory of civil society, the cultural code is a formal logic of oppositions stemming from the homology between actors, social relations, and social institutions and the duality of the code itself. Thus, since the opposition(duality) of codes and the homology(interconnectedness) of social components are the basic elements and origins of meaning-making, we found that cultural code analysis has the ability to evaluate the meaning of citizens. Next, we explored the outline meaning and basic structure of the film The Crucible(1996) under analysis and synthesized the students' cultural code analysis and discussion of the film's actors, social relations, and social institutions. The results of the analysis showed that students identified four things as citizenship; ① belief in and action on social values, ② critical and reflective judgment of social phenomena, ③ tolerance of their own and others' behavior, and ④ solidarity with the community and the pursuit of harmony between the individual and the community. Through the above discussion, we have seen that rather than unilaterally presenting the meaning of citizenship to students, a methodology that conceptualizes citizenship through a process of cultural code analysis of political and social phenomena and discussion for consensus, that is, a practice that sets goals and creates conditions for realizing them, has significance as a methodology for civic education.
