Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the structural relationship between psychological need frustration, self-esteem, and aggression in elementary school students participating in physical education. To this end, data from 419 elementary school students in grades 5 and 6 in City D in 2024 were collected after excluding unreliable data. The participants included 213 boys (50.8%) and 206 girls (49.2%), with 177 fifth-grade students (42.2%) and 242 sixth-grade students (57.8%). The validity and reliability of the survey instrument were ensured through confirmatory factor analysis, measurement model analysis, correlation analysis, and reliability analysis. The results of the study revealed that, first, frustration of basic psychological needs negatively impacted positive self-esteem and increased negative self-esteem. Second, frustration of basic psychological needs was found to increase aggression. Third, the hypothesis that positive self-esteem would reduce aggression was rejected, but negative self-esteem was found to increase aggression. Fourth, negative self-esteem was found to partially mediate the relationship between psychological need frustration and aggression. This study suggests that interventions aimed at reducing aggression may be more effective when they combine efforts to directly address psychological need frustration with physical activities aimed at restoring lowered self-esteem.
