Abstract
This study attempts to analyze parties’ function of reflecting social interests by using two measures of social reflection and social concentration. The findings showed that the major two parties in Korea have reflected the map of social interests quite well at least regarding the generation, gender, and income bases. However, the parties have reflected social interests coming out from ideological orientation by strengthening solidarity with their supporting subgroup of social interests. Regardless of the concerns of low trust in political parties, it seems that the parties have done their original role of mirroring the map of social interests during last 10 years. Interestingly, contrary to the concerns about the general social cleavages theory that emphasizes the passive role of parties’ reflecting society, Korean parties have shaped the map of social interests by accompanying strategy of concentrating appeals to a certain group of social interests by strengthening their solidarity with them.
