Abstract
In the 21st general election, Democratic Party of Korea achieved an overwhelming victory. Their landslide victory was followed by the “prosecutor reform” and other events, which had a huge impact on the political landscape and led to affective polarization spreading to the general public. In this context, this study aims to explain support for Democratic Party candidates in the 21st National Assembly election from the perspective of affective polarization. To this end, the 2021 Korean General Social Survey was analyzed. This survey included questionnaires asking emotional temperature toward political parties, allowing us to approach the effect of affective polarization on candidate support in the 21st general election. The analysis showed that the most important variables affecting candidate support were hostility towards the opposite party and party identification. Regionalism remained an important factor in predicting candidate support. However, contrary to the arguments based on assuming rational voters such as retrospective voting, policy preferences of voters did not play a significant role in predicting candidate support.
