Abstract
This study examines how voters’ media consumption influenced electoral choices in the 2022 South Korean presidential election. Specifically, it investigates the direct effects of partisan selective exposure, cross-cutting exposure, and the intensity of cross-cutting exposure on voter turnout, strength of support for the chosen candidate, and the timing of vote choice. Given the highly polarized political context over martial law and presidential impeachment, the study additionally tests whether these media-use variables indirectly affect political behavior through party identification. The results indicate that partisan selective exposure is significantly associated with the dependent variables, whereas cross-cutting exposure and its intensity show no direct effects. Nonetheless, both forms of cross-cutting exposure exhibit indirect associations with the timing of vote choice via party identification. Partisan selective exposure is positively related to identification with the Democratic Party, which in turn is associated with earlier vote decisions. Conversely, cross-cutting exposure is negatively associated with identification with both major parties, and such weakened identification is indirectly linked to delayed candidate choice. The findings suggest that cross-cutting exposure, despite voters’ preference for congenial information, may mitigate partisan attachments and promote more deliberative decision-making.
