Abstract
This study analyzed how the COVID-19 pandemic had differentially affected the sales size of small businesses by using survey data targeting small business owners in Gyeonggi-do. Specifically, under the COVID-19 pandemic, we examined what negative impacts existed differentially according to demographic, geographic, size, and industry-specific characteristics of small business owners in Gyeonggi-do. The following empirical evidence was confirmed. First, it was confirmed that demographic characteristics such as gender and age of small business owners do not have a significant discriminatory influence on the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, as a result of analyzing each of the five districts of Gyeonggi-do, there was no statistical evidence that the geographical location of small business owners, that is, the size of geographical closeness between large cities and small towns, had a differential effect on the decrease in sales of small business owners. Third, considering the number of employees of small businesses and the characteristics of each sales size, it was confirmed that there was a significant negative impact on the COVID-19 pandemic in the group with the lowest sales. This means that poor-scale small businesses are being negatively impacted by the relatively larger COVID-19. Fourth, it was confirmed that the characteristics of small businesses by industry did not significantly discriminate influencing factors for the COVID-19 pandemic. This does not mean that the various characteristics of small businesses were not significantly negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was judged that the COVID-19 pandemic situation had a negative impact on all of them regardless of the various characteristics of small businesses.
