Abstract
This study analyzes the <MMCA-Hyundai Motor Series> as a case study of corporate and public museum partnerships. Based on an agreement between the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) and Hyundai Motor Company, the <MMCA-Hyundai Motor Series> annually selected one mid-career or established Korean artist (or artist team) from 2014 to 2023 to hold a solo exhibition. Rather than directly operating a corporate art museum, Hyundai Motor supported exhibitions at a public museum, establishing a long-term, innovative partnership model—the first of its kind in Korea. The partnership can be studied in terms of the selected artist, the public-oriented museum as the collaboration platform, and the corporate entity driving the project. First, as a program targeting mid-career artists, it encourages creative endeavors and provides opportunities for the artist to engage with audiences through their work. Second, it enhances the MMCA’s public value, strengthening curatorial expertise and institutional competitiveness through exhibition diversity with financial flexibility. Third, the corporate vision and values align with the company’s cultural and arts support, demonstrating how advanced technology and global market expansion can be reflected in socially responsible activities, particularly in cultural responsibility. This case study suggests the need for government tax incentives and improvements to ESG evaluation in the capital market to foster mutually beneficial partnerships between corporations and museums.
