경운궁의 역사 및 역사콘텐츠 활용방안 연구 - <대한제국 외국공사 접견례> 개선 방안을 중심으로

본 논문은 1897년 대한제국 선포 이후 황궁 경운궁에서 서양 국가와 대등한외교적 관계의 모습을 상징적으로 보여주는 ‘대한제국 외국공사 접견례’의 배경및 의미를 알아보고 더 나아가 현재 관람객들과 호흡할 수 있는 개선안 제안을목적으로 한다. 필자는 경운궁의 역사 및 공간적 특징을 서술하였다. 경운궁은 서울 다른 궁궐과는 다르게 시기적으로 조선 중기부터 대한제국까지의 역사성을 가지고 있다. 더 나아가 전통 전각뿐만 아니라 서양식 건축물, 즉 양관(洋館)이 공존하고 있는 유일한 궁궐이다. ‘외국공사 접견례’는 대한제국기에 수교한 국가가 파견한 외교관이 고종 황제접견 시 행하는 의식 절차로 양국이 대등한 위상임을 보여준 대표적인 의례이다. 이 접견례는 대한예전을 이어받아 1902년에 편찬한 예식장정에 상세한 접견절차와 내용을 포함하고 있다. 마지막으로 2010년부터 2023년까지 시행한 경운궁 대표적인 프로그램 ‘대한제국 외국공사 접견례’의 평가를 통해 단순한 보여주기식 연극 형식이 아니라 관람객이 배우 공연에 직접 참여하여 직접 소통할 수 있는 이머시브(immersive) 형식과 다양한 자주외교와 부국강병을 위한 에피소드와 접견 절차에 따른 사료발굴을 통해 관람객이 흥미를 가지고 참여할 수 있는 다양한 방안을 제안하고자한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the background and meaning of the “Reception of Foreign Ministers of the Korean Empire,” which symbolized diplomatic relations with Western countries after the proclamation of the Korean Empire in 1897 at Gyeongwoon Palace, and to suggest improvements to make it more relevant to today’s visitors. I explained the historical and spatial features of Gyeongwoongung Palace. Unlike other palaces in Seoul, Gyeongwoongung has a history that spans from the Middle Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire. It is also the only palace in Seoul where both traditional and Western buildings coexist. The Reception of Foreign Diplomats is a ceremonial procedure performed by diplomats from countries that had diplomatic relations with the Korean Empire to meet with Emperor Gojong, and is a representative ritual that demonstrates the equal status of the two countries. The ceremony is described in detail in the Rules of Ceremonies, which was compiled in 1902 as a successor to the Daehan-yejeon Finally, through the evaluation of Gyeongwoongung Palace’s signature program, “Reception of Foreign Ambassadors of the Korean Empire,” which was held from 2010 to 2023, this paper suggests various ways to engage visitors through an immersive format where visitors can directly participate in and communicate with the actors’ performances, the discovery of various episodes of diplomacy and vice diplomacy, and the discovery of humor and history through the reception process.
