Abstract

There is a strong current in the field of school physical education. It is a trend of teaching physical education (PE) in integrative manner. Both in elementary and secondary PE levels, sport and physical activity are taught with knowledge and concepts in other subjects or disciplines. For example, in England, A-level PE for college entrance integrated the sport teaching with subdisciplinary knowledge in such areas as sport psychology, sport sociology, exercise physiology and biomechanics. This disciplinary approach to Integrated PE (IPE) made the status of PE in schools elevated through reviving it as an examinable subject. However, it is argued that PE has been overly intellectualized and academicized. The human dimension has been lost. It is argued in this paper that there is an alternative approach to IPE which is called the Narrative. The narrative knowledge and experiences, rather that academic concepts, are integrated into sport and physical activity, such as sport literature, sport arts, sport religions, and history. Sport Humanities rather than sport sciences are emphasized in this approach. After critically examining the limits of the Disciplinary approach, this paper introduces the main characteristics of this alternative approach. Practical implications for school PE are provided.
