초등교육의 예술적 성격 - 플라톤의『국가』에 기초한 탐색 -

본고는 고정된 교과학습 위주의 경쟁적인 교육 풍토 속에서 어린이의 삶이 황폐해지는 현실을 문제로 의식하며, 초등교육의 본질적 성격을 철학적으로 탐색해보려는 시도이다. 이를 위해 초등교 육의 정체성을 예술적 성격을 중심으로 재정립할 가능성을 밝혀주는 철학적 토대의 한 사례로 플라 톤 사상을 탐구하였다.『국가』에 나타난 시가(詩歌)를 통한 초기교육과 예술에 관한 견해를 분석한 결과는 다음 세 가지로 정리된다. 첫째, 예술이란 진정한 실재의 모방으로서, 아름다운 것들에 대 한 감각적 친근성과 참되고 선한 것을 사랑하는 기본성향을 발달시켜준다. 둘째, 초등교육의 목적 은 이성적 인식 이전에 미적인 체험에 기반을 둔 ‘절제’의 덕을 함양하는 데 있으며, 이것은 영혼의 조화로운 발달을 위한 질서와 균형 감각의 형성을 의미한다. 셋째, 초등교육의 예술적 성격에 부합 하는 내용과 방법 선정을 위해서는 이상성, 구체성, 서사성, 단순성, 통일성의 준거가 고려되어야 한다. 결론적으로 초등교육의 방향 정립을 위해 플라톤 사상은 여전히 유효한 통찰을 제공하며, 조 화와 균형의 예술적 원리가 간과되는 초등교육 실제에 대한 근본적인 반성이 요청된다.
Abstract
Reflecting upon the problematic situations of elementary education as having been affected by uniform competitive social conditions, we need philosophical inquiry on the essential nature of education for children in Korean society. This study explores Plato's philosophy of art and education with a view to the possibility to illuminate the artistic nature of elementary education, expecting to provide us with critical insights for re-directing the current elementary school practices. For this purpose, we deal with three themes. First, we deal with analytically Plato's philosophical thoughts on art as mimesis, which shows that the genuinely true art is to re-present not the sensible things but the ideal being and thereby cultivating the loving spirit of eros so as to desire and look after the beauty. Secondly, we examine Plato's educational theory of mousike in relation to his theory of art, which indicates that temperance as fundamental disposition toward harmonious unity comprises the educational aim for the primary stage of human development. Thirdly, we explore Plato's critical ideas to discriminate the various substances and forms with respect to their educative values, which suggests perceptually good experience preparing for logical reason and artistic simplicity in form and matter as the criteria for curriculum construction in elementary education.
