17세기 후반에 등장한 조선판 아틀라스는 18세기 조선 사회의 지적 동향과 수요에 발맞추어 새로운 정보를 수록하면서 변화해 나갔다. 역사 정보를 공간 정보의 구성 요소로 인식하고 역사 정보를 목판본 아틀라스에싣는 새로운 현상이 18세기에 시작된 것이다. 또한 역사 정보에 더해 도별 인구, 토지, 속오군 병력, 군선 통계가 수록되었다. 이러한 통계는 해동지도 류의 도 단위 고을지도책이나 정상기 류의 동국지도 팔도분첩에도수록되는 것으로 당시 지식인들의 관심을 반영한다. 아울러 도별로 주요 고을의 역사 정보와 명승지 정보를 수록하는 양상도 이어서 나타난다. 이러한 전개는 명의 멸망 이후 새로운 국제질서 속에서 조선의 지식인들이 자신들의 역사적 연원을 바탕으로 역사의식을 강화하고 이로써 '문명'의 유일한 담지자로서 자존을 지키려는 노력에 이어져 있었다. 또한 새로 수록되는 명승지 관련 정보는 조청 정계 이후로 안정되어 가는 국제 정세를 배경으로 역사의 무대인 국토에 대한 관심이 유람에 대한 관심과 중첩되는 상황을 반영한다.
Abstract
The Joseon version atlas, which appeared in the late 17th century, evolved to incorporate new information in response to the intellectual trends and demands of 18th-century Joseon society. The 18th century witnessed the emergence of a new phenomenon: recognizing historical information as a component of spatial information and incorporating it into maps within woodblock atlases. In addition to historical information, the book also included statistics on population, land, military personnel, and military vessels by province. These statistics were also included in provincial atlases like the “Haedongjido” and Jeong Sang-gi’s “Donggukjido”, reflecting the interests of intellectuals of the time. Furthermore, the practice of including historical information and scenic spots for major counties by province continued to emerge. This development stemmed from the efforts of Joseon intellectuals, who, amidst the new international order following the fall of the Ming Dynasty, sought to strengthen their historical consciousness based on their historical roots and thereby preserve their self-esteem as the sole bearers of “civilization.” Furthermore, the newly included information on scenic spots reflects the growing interest in the nation as a historical stage, overlapping with interest in travel, amidst the international situation stabilizing after the demarcation of the border between Joseon and Qing.
