Abstract
The various forms of contemporary prints have been with the concepts and interpretation of modern arts. Nowadays, traditional concepts and meanings of both printmaking and printing have been disintegrated. This aspect reveals not only diverse structural area that modern arts include but also experimentation of media arts that duplication technology can make. Fifteenth century, the history of western prints was born with beginning of Gutenberg's printing technique and then it had been developed in the beginning of history of books. The term, 'incunabula' identifies such a same development between letter and image. Moreover, the history of prints shows not only a basic difference between letter and image but also knowledge and experience which objects and events can be expressed and described. These meanings of images in printmaking turned up the integrated and conflict process. we have distinguished and perceived natural differences between 'drawing' and 'printing' in the same line between 'originality' and 'reproduction'. Printing technique influenced on the new terminology, criteria and genre of artistic area from practical viewpoints to artistic knowledge itself and it made some chinks among them. For example, as we know it, use of the terms from visual communication to fine art, to graphics, printmaking and prints, such reveals a gap in interpretation which is not easy unified by each different syntax. However, first of all, print is an image of something printed but behind meaning of prints have its the purpose, intention and quality as an printed image itself and it indicates the results and effects of society development which has required in total availability. Embryologically, printing technique can make material object reproductive. That is inhered in what proliferation and deliberation of images mean and printing method has the structural property itself to reproduce images multiply by physical projection. In spite of that, as the difference is between oneness and similarity, printed images show the distinct aspects of visibility in the line of visual representation. In the same line, 1997, the exhibition <Print Paradigm> in Pompidou centre, (Paris), it suggests some of essential points. Reproductive prints were able to acquire the new meanings in its fundamental properties which of material media and it indicates symptomatic values what Didi Huberman said, which implies 'paradigm' or 'the change of world view' by phenomenological approach. It seems to be immediately exposure and it reveals artist's intentional ideas, perceptive composition through iconography modification as the process of visual unconsciousness. By means of it, we can search for not only what reproductive technology means, as well as how it structurally is but also what a kind of property of media that of printing technology takes another meaning from visibility. Searching for the properties of visual perception through printing technology invests the traditional printmaking with new right that of the origin of media art. And it means a trial that has been in the continuous lines of the name of arts, especially, including photography, from printing to digital technique. 'Print paradigm' by Didi Huberman and its representative artist, Marcel Duhamp’infra-thin’, they suggest that 'drawing by something material' becomes extinct and images appear again in the virtuality. In the history of arts, the virtual could have happened with Dadaists and Surrealists. Both has emphasized on the turning of artistic concepts, announcing irrational mind and unconsciousness. Dadaists coped traditional concepts, 'being narrative' and 'Mimesis' with composition and 'ready-made' which opened new visuality while Surrealists declared their basic concepts, 'frottage' and 'assemblage', which could have happened as an atypical image what a seer can discover through unconscious legibility in terms of a chance discovery. They highlight on the quality of imagination and the birth of metamorphosis that an image presents. Finally, the quality of media arts associates with proliferation of images. However, there are no perfect replicas in even reproduction(by Andy Warhol) and it also shows internationality and exposure by reproductive technique (by Gerhard Richter). Print installation and print object critically implies that the transformation of reproductive forms against conventional and objective printing forms in cultural point of view. Such indicates the expansion of the printmaking concept.
