21세기 디지털 테크놀로지의 시대에 미디어아트 교육이 미술관의 새로운 화두로 떠올랐다. 기존의 초등학교 대상 미술관 교육프로그램들이 체험이나 단순한 표현에 머물렀던 것에 반하여 최근에는 감상과 제작, 표현, 체험이 어우러진 혼합형 프로그램들이 등장하고 있다. 하지만 대다수의 국내미술관에서 진행되는 미디어아트 교육은 실습이나 표현의 수준에 머물러 있는 경우들이 많다. 이와 같은 교육방식은 미디어의 역할이 날로 확장되고 복잡해지는 현대 사회에서 미디어아트가 지닌 미학적, 사회적인 역할을 학생들이 인식하게 하는데 역부족이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 미술관에서 진행되는 초등학생 대상 미디어아트 교육프로그램을 ‘비평적 미디어 리터러시’의 측면에서 살펴보고자 한다. 백남준아트센터에서 지난 2016년부터 3년간 행해진 <사물-놀이: 사물해킹>, <사물과의 대화>, <모두와 그리는 마을>의 교육프로그램을 통하여 학생들이 비평적이고 분석적으로 미디어를 통해서 전달되는 메시지를 인식하게 되는 과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 미국 탭스에서 규정한 다섯 가지의 미디어 리터러시 교육과정과 2015년 개정된 미디어 교육의 주요 목표인 ‘교과 간 융합능력,’ ‘문제해결 능력’ 등의 기준을 적용해보고자 한다. 이것은 미술관에서 행해지는 미디어아트 교육 목표가 다각화되는 과정에 주목하기 위함이다. 아울러 비평적 미디어 리터러시 프로그램이 소개되면서 미술관 교육과 학교 교육이 만날 가능성에 대해서도 다루어보고자 한다.
Abstract
In the age of 21st century digital technology, media art education has emerged as a new hot topic for the discourses about museums. While the existing art museum education programs for elementary school students mostly focus on experiential and simple expressive workshops, mixed programs that combine appreciation, production, expression, and experience have become recently popularized. Meanwhile, most education programs of media arts education in domestic art museums in South Korea are usually drawn upon practical learning of technological gadgets for self-expression. Such dominant educational approach is, however, not sufficient enough to help students become aware of the aesthetic and social roles of media art in a modern Korean society where the role of media is ever expanding and complicated. Therefore, this study is to examine media art education programs for elementary school students in light of theories of “critical media literacy.” Participating students are allowed to approach media messages, both critically and analytically, in art programs such as Objects-Play: Things Hacking (2016), Conversation with Things (2017), and The Village Drawn along with Everyone (2018) at the NamJunePaik Art Center. In analyzing these programs, I would like to apply the five media literacy curriculum defined by the T-A-P (Technology, Audience, Production) in the United States and the criteria such as “interdisciplinary convergence ability” and “problem solving ability”, in accordance with the main objectives of media education by the Government in 2015. This is aimed at paying attention to the diverged goals of media arts education programs in South Korean art museums. In addition, the critical media literacy program will be introduced to further discuss the possible convergence of art education programs at museums and schools.
