Abstract
This study attempts to recall the perceptual film produced by experimental filmmakers in the late 1960s. This researcher intends to reveal that the meaning of the frame construction found in their works was an act involving the possibility of an alternative film and that the 'Measurement' and 'Sculptural activity' through the frame were the procedures to face the moment of introspection. Therefore, this study is a reflective review of the Perceptual Film. Perceptual Film resemble the measurement of scientific methods, and measurement is a scientific concept useful for understanding the characteristics of Perceptual Film. In addition, applying measurements understood as science to representative Perceptual Film, 'measurement' can be a practical opportunity for artistic 'Activity'. The film, which emphasized the celluloid, defined the film by operating the film in physical condition, and included the screen and the audience composing the film environment in the meaning of the work. The light and sound of a Perceptual Film are quantified as a frame, like a kind of binary code, and are received by audiences through a strictly restrained minimalistic visual and auditory phenomenon. In the exchange of signals that are unitized but not conceptualized, the meaning of the work is reset each time. This was possible because it emphasized perception as an aesthetic experience rather than emphasizing the concept of work. In the measurement situation of these films, Measurement and Activity do not distinguish between the boundaries of creation and appreciation. The activity, which was the original authority of the artist, gives the audiences the psychological subjectivity of the film to enable the independent interpretation of the work. In other words, this perceptual experience was effective for both the artist and the audience, and The spectatorship of traditional narrative film faced the unfamiliar situation of the alienation effect. Therefore, the meaning relationship between the Audience and the Film is not fixed, and is re-considered each time it is screened. The meaning of the Perceptual Film is not fixed, but always floating, which is different according to time and space.
