Abstract
As horror films gain global popularity, their sound design has become a crucial factor influencing audience experiences. This study examines South Korean and Chinese audiences, investigating horror film sound's impact on auditory perception across two dimensions: emotional response and perceptual congruence. It proposes and tests hypothesis (H1) that significant differences exist between these groups in sound effect perception. Using questionnaire data analyzed with SPSS (frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-tests), results show Chinese audiences reacted more strongly to animal sounds, while Korean audiences were more sensitive to natural, action-related and special sounds. Mechanical sounds elicited similar responses. For perceptual congruence, Korean audiences showed greater temporal and anticipatory perception sensitivity, while Chinese audiences demonstrated stronger spatial perception.
