Abstract

This study aims to explore the core competencies of Pilates instructors through a qualitative approach, in order to establish a theoretical foundation for understanding instructional expertise and professional standards in the field. Using qualitative methods, in-depth interviews were conducted based on the frameworks of Lucia and Lepsinger (1999) and Spencer and Spencer (1993), yielding insights into key instructor competencies. The findings categorize competencies into four domains: professional knowledge, instructional skills, personal traits, and class management. Professional knowledge involves critical areas such as anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation and corrective exercise, and injury prevention, emphasizing their necessity in crafting safe and effective exercise programs. Instructional skills highlight the ability to deliver customized instruction, communicate motivationally, and respond promptly to unexpected situations. Personal traits include continuous self-improvement, emotional regulation, and fostering strong participant relationships. Class management focuses on designing engaging and safe lesson plans, tailoring sessions to participant goals, and maintaining a conducive learning environment. The results provide a comprehensive analysis of the essential competencies that contribute to the professional growth and effectiveness of Pilates instructors, offering practical implications for improving their practice.
